New ventures

I think it's about time to post something that doesn't involve a picture of my preggo belly! In one of my last posts I mentioned that I'm creating a business. 'Tis true.

For several years now I've had a thought in the back of my mind that I wanted to start a resale shop. Mostly those thoughts revolved around kids clothes, toys, books and such. Well, then one morning I woke up at like 3 am and could NOT get back to sleep. My mind was just going like crazy about a curriculum shop.

Here I am a home school mama. A mama who's noticed that if you want to buy or sell curriculum almost all of the transactions are done online.

I'm also the kind that wants to look through books, to be able to touch and feel them...browse a bit before knowing if it's something I'd want to buy. I believe that I'm not alone on this one. :)

So, I've decided that I'm going to open a used curriculum store (and possibly a kids clothing section). To start off with it's going to exist in the basement of our house, with the goal of having a building to move to in late spring of next year.

I've put a lot of prayer into this and I believe that this is the way I'm being led, or at least something I'm being given permission to pursue. It's something that my kids and I can do together and eventually they will be old enough to take it over completely (if they are interested). Also, it's something that my husband is very on board with.

It's been pretty amazing how much progress has happened in just the last couple of months towards this! I'm hosting a party for the ladies from our church next Friday to talk with them about this new venture, get the word out and hopefully some of them will have some helpful feedback for me.

How about you? What do you think?

I love your ambition!

I'm a hands on kinda girl too. I'd much rather look and touch books than order online.

Very cool, Laura and awesome that Ian is encouraging of it! I'm excited to hear more about it.

I could see myself doing this someday. We had one of these out in Virginia, and the owner was an older homeschool mom with a wealth of experience. People went to talk to her and get her advice as much as they went to get great deals on used curriculum. Being a curriculum junkie who is so passionate about helping other homeschool moms, I'd love to do something like that!
I will be praying that this new venture goes well for you!!

Laura, this is a fantastic idea!!!

It's confirmation that Ian's on board so thoroughly!

If I lived in your neighborhood, I'd visit your shop!

And I think your idea of pitching the idea to your ladies and friends at church is a very wise move!

Show pictures when you get it all together....and maybe pictures of your finished kitchen!!! Lol.

God bless your new venture abundantly!!

Awesome! We have a homeschool family in the area who had an old barn out back and turned into into a use curriculum consignment store. They've now added a tea room and serve lunch. So fun to go shopping there. It's been a great resource for me and people travel from miles around. I pray that the word gets out and God blesses you and your family through this.

I think it's great! What a great service you will provide to the home school community. I'm sure that Heavenly Father will bless you in your desire and efforts to help others.

wow Laura!
I think it's great that you are working on something as a family. I hope my kids will own their own business. A family business seems like a great way to keep everyone focused on eachother vs on more worldly endeavors (hope that makes sense). I look forward to hearing more about this as you start down this road.

I feel the same way! I prefer to be hands on with my curriculum selections as well. I want to flip through it. I want to see the "meat" of the book. Seeing the front cover and reading a description/ review is just not enough. :)
Prayers that everything goes really well with your new adventure.

God bless!

Laura, I love this idea!
I am one that likes to be able to flip through, as well. I have a very hard time buying stuff without actually putting my hands on it first. It sounds like God leading, too, so I'm praying for big blessings in it.
