Have you ever had a conversation that left you speechless?

I stopped by a garagle sale over the weekend and ended up chatting with the lady running it. I guess we had met before. So, we talked a bit about kids and how I liked island life etc. Then she asked me if we went to church on the island. I told her that we had tried a couple and have actually started going to one off island. Blah, blah, blah, anyway. Then I asked her if she went to church here and she said....I kid you not....

Nature is my church.

Nature is my church?

What is that???

Ummm,

I.was.speechless.

She was serious.

Wow.

So, what would you have said my quick witted friends?

I'm not sure I would have been quick witted enough to respond with this on the spot, but my quickly contemplated response as I read is, "You know, experienced some very special times of worship out in God's creation; it is such a beautiful sanctuary. But it certainly doesn't replace a body of believers with whom I can worship the Creator and a church where I can serve and be challenged and grow in my faith."

Like I said, that's probably what would have popped into my mind as I drove away. ;)

I definitely would have been speechless as well!! How do you respond to that kind of comment? Does she find God in nature or does she worship nature or ?????

I had different thoughts than everyone else...

I would have asked her what she meant by that. It could be construed to mean that either she worshipped the creaTION or she had had some really great worship times with the Lord out in nature.

I'm not sure if I would have been thinking on my feet to ask that, though.....but the remark made me curious as to exactly what she meant.

Because I've seen and heard God in nature more often than in a building called "church", frankly....

Did I over-analyze??

You know, you'd think with all that goes on around us we wouldn't be so wide-eyed and shocked when people think stuff like this. I like Emily's answer.

I've been around lots of people like that, and I don't think there's anything you can say. Just smile and nod.
