Reading list
I have a daughter who loves to read and I am very happy about this. I also have a son who is a budding reader. So whenever we are at thrift stores or garage sales I keep my eye out for books. Every once in awhile though I find one that I'm not happy with. The hard part though is that I don't have the time to read all of the books before my kids do. This is where I try to glean information from friends about what books their kids are reading. I've gotten a bunch of great suggestions! Anyway, this past week I picked up a copy of Bridge to Teribithia. I remember reading this when I was a fifth grader and my husband and I watched the movie when it came out. It seemed like a good pick, but I was still a bit unsure. I decided to read it first just to be confident in my decision. After about 30 pages and two curse words later I've decided they won't be reading it. Maybe I'll re-evaluate it again later, probably not though. How about you? Have you found any absolute MUST reads? Or have you compiled a list of ones to avoid??

i did the same thing. i remembered reading that book so i read it again. we have seen the movie (and i hated it) but i didn't really care for the themes in the book. it seemed like the kids had all the answers and the parents were stupid and just in the way. so, i'm shelving it.
You must trust your instinct.
God gave you to parent these children....
Your gut feelings are right on.
And I would encourage you, as the CEO of your home, to make time to read every single book that comes before your children's eyes.
As a mom, I take that responsibility very, very seriously.
We love the Hardy Boys. It's just good, clean fun.....Nancy Drew we don't love. Anne of Green Gables is tops in my book....
Just some thoughts!

We just finished the "Little House" series. However, I did edit a little because in our house "durn" is a bad word (it's only mentioned a few time throughout the whole series though)
I agree it is hard to figure out books in a bookstore. I keep lists in my car and if I find alot of books at a thrift sale. I go get the lists. We like Cricket in Time square and the boxcar children series, little house books, and Five little Peppers and how they grew. The older the books the safer they usually are but not always.
Blessings,
Dawn

This may be a totally unnecessary comment, but keep them away from those 'Goosebumps' books. My daughter brought one home from the school library once and I insisted on reading it with her. I am gald I did because she was upset by some of the supernatural themes. I have told her not to read any more of them.
I loved the "What Katy did" series when I was little (by Susan Coolidige), the Chronicles of Narnia, the "Princess and Curdie" books by George MacDonald.....I could go on.......
I love the Betsy Tacy books by Maud Hart Lovelace. They were written in the 1940s and are great for little girls. We have read the first one and have ordered the second one through the library. A baby does die in the first book, but this is based on the true life of the author. If that troubles you, you could skip that chapter.
